After many months of building and beta-testing we are pleased to announce that Webon is officially moving out of beta and into a new home at Angelfire!

Angelfire is one of Lycos' flagship publishing platforms, with a thriving and active community of builders. Moving Webon here will provide us with some exciting benefits that we'll detail below, and our primary goal during this process is to make the transition as smooth as possible for you. At no point will you need to move your sites, your files, or do anything at all. All existing features and Web addresses will continue to work and a number of new features should become available soon.

What things are changing?

1.) New URL.
We are changing the URL of our Homepage to http://webon.angelfire.lycos.com. But the old http://www.webon.com address will continue to work as well... so nobody will get lost.

2.) New Logo. You will notice the Angelfire logo appearing with the Webon logo.

3.) New Publish Location. Eventually, users will be publishing their websites to a new address at yoursite.ash.com (ash = Angelfire Site Hosting). However, all existing Webon Site URLs will continue to work exactly as before. You will not need to worry about updating existing links to your site unless you want to. More on this in a later post.

The Webon Site Builder itself will continue to get upgrades, improvements, new styles, and new functionality added to it going forward.

What are the benefits for you?

1.) Email and Multiple Domain Management
. Angelfire's platform already supports email addresses for your Domains, and more advanced management of multiple Domains... so look for those soon.

2.) Google's AdSense. This move will put Webon in a much better place to offer Google's AdSense which will give you another way to make money from your site. Now that we're joining up with Angelfire, we'll be able to meet Google's requirements to offer AdSense sooner and we will work hard to get that out to you as quickly as we can.

3.)  More Traffic. Angelfire is one of the largest website hosts around and receives a lot of traffic from visitors.  Once Webon is integrated, more visitors will be able to find your sites than ever before.

As usual please feel free to leave comments and questions and we will answer them as they come in.

Does this mean there is a clear Lycos path for upgrading the account and growth for Web-on including live help, document storage, etc?

Do you upgrade using the Angelfire Site and then continue to log onto webon?

Regarding your first comment/question... there will be a number of phases to this integration. We will clearly detail them in this blog as we go forward. Nothing is fully set yet but overall we plan to make Webon and Angelfire play nicely together and integrate functions of each with each other.

To the second question... upgrading your Webon plan is still done through Webon's interface but we will be merging the plans and billing interface pretty soon. Eventually, upgrading your Angelfire plan will be what triggers your Webon upgrade.

We promise to be proactive and detailed in this blog as things switch over and we will do everything in our power to make the transition as easy and seemless for users as possible.

Is there a way to upgrade to live support yet or is this just in transition now?

Not yet, but that is coming. The migration is moving forward in 3 Phases. We've completed Phase 1. Connecting to live support should be available at the conclusion of Phase 3. Our current target for completion of Phase 3 is end of February / early March.

I was so afraid when I first saw the alert after I signed in. Gladly, what I read here makes me feel a whole lot better. I don't think I can take the disappointment Cryof another free webhosting site dissing me. (I've got that dozens of times b4). I've actually found a web-hosting site I like: love the functionality! SmileI'll continue to use Webon no matter what (hopefully the hardworking team will be able to keep the site (my website) ad-free! Anyway, I look forward to the bigger better things that I'm promised and hope my website will continue to reflect the improvements that Webon itself is making. My site: http://rohankw.webonsites.com/ Thanks again Webon! Laughing

What has happened to the special HTML feature on Free?

Author Comment   Posted by webon.team February 13th, 2009
Custom HTML should still be working the same as it always has. I just tested it and had no problems. Little tip... for quick responses to little tech problems try following Webon on Twitter and sending an @reply - http://twitter.com/webon_team

is ad sense available now?

Author Comment   Posted by webon.team February 15th, 2009

We're definitely planning on a creating a system where you can password protect sites soon.

AdSensewill take a little longer... have to get fully settled in at Angelfire but we'll launch it as soon as we possibly can. We actually have a lot of the back end code and User interface stuff done but we have some work to do meeting Google's requirements and we can't start that until we are 100% integrated with Angelfire.

How about the ability to load PDF documents into our site.  For example - a link that users can click on that with either download the PDF to their computer, or open it in a new window.  This would be great for restaurant menus.  I have several business waiting for websites, and I'm waiting for WebOn to incorporate these features so I can give my customers what they need for their sites.  Also, how about expanding the choice of templates (more business themed ones) and having a photo library so that if we need a specific photo or graphic - like a photo of a dog for a dog grooming service, or a pizza for a take-out restaurant - we could just dip into the library and pull it out on the fly.

Regarding the background color change on the photo albums - how about letting US choose the background color??  I realize your intention of matching the photo album's background color to the site colors, but if WE could choose from an array of colors, that would be great.  I kinda liked the black background the way it was before actually.  Is there any way you could fix it so that WE can choose our own colors for the photo album?

A lot of great suggestions here and we definitely value them all. Even if we don't act on them immediately they all go into the system.

More specifically:
- More templates.. definitely.
- File uploading (PDFs and Word Docs and such)... going to happen at some point
- Stock photos and other art... something we've talked about quite a bit.

Right now we're just striving to get this migration to Angelfire completed so we can keep bringing you new features.

Hello, I left a message on December and until now I have no received any answer from support.

I created a site keauganda.webonsites.com but now when I sign in I cannot see the site, like if it were lost or something, it does not appear in my sites. I am building this site for a community association in Uganda and they cannot afford a paid host, that is why we decided to do it with you.

Again, sorry for bringing up this here but I see no other place where I can contact you. I hope you can give me a hand with this. My email is angelabathory@gmail.com. Thank you.

I think this is so great! I read about Webon in a magazine, but when I went on here and saw it with the Angelfire logo, I was confused. But now I know! Anyway, I think adding little chat rooms and actually making an RSS feed for you automatically would be nice. CUL8R!Cool

You have to leave your username in order for us to help you.

But chances are that there is already an index file in the location you are trying to publish to.

Use the File Manager and go to the place that you are trying to publish and remove/delete any files called index.html or index.htm

then try again
